First Looks: Design & Construction Week's 2016 Product Debuts
By now you’ve probably heard about the two giant trade shows that kicked off 2016. The first was the AHR expo, Jan. 25-27 in Orlando.
The second was right in our Western back yard. Design & Construction Week (Four major industry shows under one roof: the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show; the National Association of Home Builders’ International Business Show; plus the International Window Coverings Expo and the International Surface Event) was in Las Vegas Jan. 19-22.
Shows of this size are the perfect places for manufacturers to debut new products to an industry thirsting for them. As the doors opened on KBIS 2016, manufacturers hoped their newest offerings would spark imagination…and profits. [For more things we found at the show, be sure to also check out the “Radiant Roundup” feature] Now it’s time to see what we found at Design & Construction Week. Here, in alpha order, are some highlights of what we found:
ACO has worked with noted bathroom designers to introduce the ACO ShowerShelf, a functional stainless-steel shower accessory that matches the QuARTz ACO ShowerDrain grate design. The ShowerShelf is developed to serve as the resting spot for shower essentials. The new selection of offset shower channels makes installation easy, the company said, and is designed for when the joist is in the center of the shower opening and notching or drilling is not an option.
American Standard’s Fluent Collection of bath faucets showcases a fluid transitional design inspired by the movement of water, the company said. The faucets in this new line feature an ADA-compliant angled handle design for a more comfortable grip and the option of adding discreet hot and cold color indicators on the handles. To provide simplified installation, all lavatory faucets feature the exclusive Speed Connect drain — the pre-assembled drain that never needs adjusting. The lavatory models are WaterSense-certified and deliver water savings without sacrificing performance.
Acquor’s House Hydrant is a faucet system that makes accessing water from an outdoor source a hassle-free experience. Offering excellent leak- and freeze protection, the new House Hydrant 2 provides freeze protection up to -30° F with no additional cover needed, the company said, along with additional backflow protection thanks to an integrated atmospheric vacuum breaker that meets ASSE 1019-A specifications and doesn’t blow back water when disconnected, according to the company.
Enviro Water Products
One way to live up to some water heater manufacturers’ expectation the product will get regular scale inhibition treatments in hard water areas is to install something like Enviro Water Products’ Water Heater Shield. Newly introduced is the 20 gallon-per-minute version of the product, which is equipped with a five micron high-efficiency, high-performing filter that removes dirt, rust, silt and sediment particles down to 1/20th the size of a human hair, while the Sliphos media within the filter chamber prevents scale and stops corrosion within the water heater, the company said.
Isenberg’s line of cascade/sheet flow tub-fillers (CFB.2150) sits flush-to-wall after installation. The product can be used as a tub-filler or a showerhead because it has an in-built adjustable water flow rate. The product has an enclosing valve with a leak-proof mechanism. It also has a rubber lining which prevents drips and dribbles during water turn-on and turn-off. The product has adjustable flow rates from 2- to 11 gpm and has a trim plate available in several finishes such as chrome, brushed nickel, polished nickel and matt black.
Viega LLC has expanded its ViegaPEX tubing line, introducing purple PEX for reclaimed water. ViegaPEX tubing for reclaimed water has the highest rating for chlorine and is available in ½”, ¾” and 1” sizes. ViegaPEX tubing for reclaimed water can aid a home in receiving LEED or National Green Building Standard points, the company said. Installation of the new tubing alongside other Viega PureFlow solutions is seamless with system-matched tools
and jaws. Purple is the standard color of tubing for reclaimed water lines. According to 2012 EPA Guidelines for Water Reuse, the use of recycled water in lieu of imported water for replenishing the groundwater has saved tens of millions of dollars a year in water purchases.
KWC’s ZOE touch light PRO kitchen faucet is controlled using smart technology. It responds intuitively to a brief touch and is extremely easy to program. The round operating unit features a light ring that indicates the water temperature selected. With three simple taps, water temperature switches between cold, warm and hot. In addition, the luminaqua LED feature surrounding the spray head transforms water into a play of light.
Kohler’s Veil one-piece toilet offers hygiene and comfort with bidet personal cleansing, an LED nightlight, and hands-free opening and closing. Its dual flush offers a choice of 0.8 or 1.28 gal. per flush. The stainless-steel bidet wand offers adjustable spray shape, position, water pressure, temperature, pulsate and oscillate functions. It also features a self-cleaning function, a heated seat and emergency flush feature for power outages. Included components are: Complete toilet and seat, supply stop valve, braided inlet supply hose, power cord, and LCD remote control.
QuickDrain’s WallDrain was engineered to sit flush along the wall. It features a 316L stainless-steel body with the company’s patented Sure Flow System that leaves no standing water in the drain body. It features a sloped trough design to remove all the water and debris from the trough after each use. With three standard sizes (48”, 72” and 96”) the company also offers trough extensions for an exact fit. The grate assembly can be adjusted to the thickness of the wall’s ceramic tile or stone covering.
Navien now boasts remote access for all its tankless water heaters (NPE series), combi-boilers (NCB-E series) and gas condensing boilers (NHB series) through the new NaviLink Wi-Fi control and mobile application. NaviLink will be able to report and monitor diagnostic data through the companion app along with error code notification. The NaviLink module, attaches to the series listed above by using a quick connect cable allowing the NaviLink to connect to Wi-Fi networks. Once connected and the free Navien application is downloaded and activated, users will have access to control their tankless, combi-boiler, and boiler systems from a smartphone or tablet.
Moen’s Via bath collection offers a modern, streamlined look aimed at compatibility with a multitude of styles.Available in a chrome finish, Via offers a single-handled option in either standard or low-profile heights, or widespread, two-handled faucets. Rounding out the collection are tub/shower, shower-only and valve-only shower components and a range of matching accessories, the company said.
Niagara Conservation has rolled out its One-Piece Design Toilet featuring the company’s Stealth Technology. The One-Piece Toilet meets EPA WaterSense criteria and is MaP Premium rated. Niagara’s One-Piece with Stealth Technology is flapper-less, eliminating water leaks, and also features a smooth, low friction ceramic surface that helps achieve a clear bowl every time.
The Noble Co.
The Thin-Bed Drain from The Noble Company is the only drain designed for top mounted applications with a clamping collar to ensure a watertight connection between a NobleSeal sheet membrane and the drain. Thin-Bed Drains are ideal for barrier free applications because of their extremely low profile, the company said. Water flows into the top of the drain, and there is no need for weep holes. Available with square or round strainers in three finishes (brushed golden nickel, brushed stainless, and chrome).
