Press technology makes pipe joining a snap
A Pressing Situation
There’s nothing more exemplary of a skilled plumber’s work than a mechanical room or piping system featuring brightly soldered, orderly rows of copper tubing. Plumbers know, however, that sweating a pipe takes some time and, in the fast-paced world of new construction at least, time is money and the less time spent joining pipes means more money dropping to the contractor’s bottom line.
Enter pressing pipe joining technology. Several tool companies offer battery-operated press-to-connect tools and all the necessary accessories to make joining various types of tubing and piping—some up to 4-inch diameter--a snap on the jobsite. And there’s the added bonus of an all-but eliminated fire risk.
Just cut the pipe to length, deburr the end and insert it into the specially designed fitting making sure it seats completely. Make a mark with an indelible pen of some type on the pipe when it’s fully inserted into the fitting. This will be used after the fitting is pressed on to make sure the pipe remained fully seated during the whole process.
Then, with the proper size pressing jaw inserted into the tool, just clamp onto the fitting and pull the trigger to begin joining the pipes. When the pressing tool is finished, remove the jaws from the pipe and have a look. You should see obvious signs the joint was squeezed, and the mark on the tubing you made earlier should not have moved in relation to the fitting, confirming the pipe remained seated.
Video Inspection System
General’s PalmScope is a pocket-sized video inspection system for detecting leaks, cracks, corrosion and deposit buildup. The 4X zoom and 180° video flip functions make it easier to read upside-down labels and serial numbers. It has a 2 ft. long probe with a 0.35” diameter camera tip and offers a depth of field of 1” to 10 ft. and a 60° field of view. Video is produced on a 2.7” color LCD screen with 320 x 240 pixel resolution. It includes a 45° mirror, pickup hook, magnetic pickup and thread protector.

Hydrostatic Test Pump
Use of a cordless drill for power keeps weight off this test pump, making it lightweight and portable. Also, the included hose (with quick disconnect feature) permits pump to be set near the work instead of being held close to the work. Reed’s new DPHTP500 uses a corded drill with 1/2” chuck or 1/2” cordless 18V or higher drill, capable of 1500 RPM. (Drill not included.) The pump can be run by the drill motor in forward or reverse. Use of a cordless drill also eliminates the need for a drop cord. These pumps are designed for pressure testing both residential and commercial water systems and they have a capacity of 500 psi and 1.3 gallons per minute.

General Pipe Cleaners Speedrooter 92™ blends rugged reliability with ease-of-use.
The redesigned inner drum is molded to surround and contain the Flexitube™ distributor tube to prevent cable tangling, while still allowing the operator to see how much cable is left in the drum. The Flexitube spring distributor tube allows the cable to feed and retract more smoothly, even if the frame has been damaged and abused. A grease fitting has also been added to the hub to make it easier to grease and maintain the machine.

Saw It® provides pneumatic power and reciprocating motion to blades. Reed offers blades to cut plastic, steel, stainless steel, and C900 PVC pipe. This SAWITSD saw is safer and cuts straighter than a gas-powered chop saw. The Saw It® Vise allows the saw to pivot straight into the pipe, giving the operator better control over the cut. Used together, this saw is EASY to handle. Saw It operates at 300 strokes/minute, however, the Saw It is not recommended for gas lines.
