Brought to you by Reeves Journal Magazine - Serving the western plumbing industry for 88 years

The Season is Approaching

It's not too early to start thinking about the upcoming trade show season for 2008. We may have hardly gotten the spilled tortilla chips from the Super Bowl party vacuumed up from the living room rug, but the 2008 trade show season is looming large.

We did some checking around and saw that there are several notable trade shows, educational seminars and other industry events on tap for the year. We also discovered a host of California shows and seminar events hosted by local PHCC chapters.
The point, however, is to reinforce one of the basic ideas in any industry. Trade shows, educational seminars and similar off-site activities are well worth the time and money spent to attend. Why? Well, where else are you going to be able to meet face-to-face with your colleagues and compare notes on successfully running a contracting business? Where else will you be able to sit in on live educational seminars on the latest products and techniques in the industry? Where else will you be able to pay an in-person visit to the manufacturers who supply the products you offer your customers?
Trade shows and educational seminars, that's where. So go ahead and treat yourself--start planning to attend a couple of industry events this year.

Trade Shows and Events Coming Soon

Compiled by Wendy Levine

As spring finally approaches, a plumber’s thoughts turn to…trade shows. If some of your resolutions include learning about the latest products, keeping up on regulatory and business issues facing the industry, or just getting out more, there’s plenty to choose from. Here’s a taste of the 2008 season:

First up is the Construction Contractors’ Alliance Meeting. The Alliance celebrates its 10th anniversary Feb. 27-29, at the Adolphus Hotel. The rundown of activities and events can be found at www.phccweb.org. For more information, e-mail Charlotte Perham at perham@naphcc.org.

The Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort & Spa in sunny Palm Desert, Calif., will be the site for the Mechanical Contractors Association of America’s annual convention Mar. 4-6. For more information, call (301) 869-5800 or register at eventregistration@mcaa.org.

Mar. 5-7 will be the dates for the HVACR & Plumbing Instructor Workshop, at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne, Va. Contact Mary Beth Hall at (800) 533-7694 for more details or e-mail hall@naphcc.org.

Also in March is Quality Service Contractors’ Power Meeting XXVIII, set for Mar. 6-8 at the Doral Desert Princess Resort in Palm Springs. Call (800) 533-7694, ext. 893 for more information, or drop an e-mail to dalton@naphcc.org. You could also visit www.qsc-phcc.org.

The Plumbing Manufacturers Institute’s 2008 Spring Meeting is scheduled for Mar. 30-Apr. 2 at the Balboa Bay Club Resort in Newport Beach, Calif. Contact the Association at (847) 884-9764 or visit www.pmihome.org for more information.

Although aimed primarily at the designer crowd, this year’s K/BIS Show, put on by the national Kitchen & Bath Association, offers massive opportunities for networking and education. K/BIS 2008 will be held at Chicago's McCormick Place Apr. 10-13.  Back this year is K/BIS Connect, offering an interactive floor plan combined with an integrated agenda planner that helps organize your time at the show. The latest information is posted at  www.kbis.com. Call (800) 933-8735 for more details.

The first Green West Expo and Conference will launch May 20-22 in Los Angeles. The event promises a full spectrum of exhibits, conference panels, in-depth exhibitor product presentation seminars, special events, keynote addresses, and unique networking opportunities on one show floor, all included with admission. The conference will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  Check out the Web site at www.GreenWestExpo.com, or send an e-mail to info@GreenWestExpo.com.

If you only make one show this year, it is likely to be the ISH North America Trade Show and 126th Annual Convention, scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 4 at Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center. Held concurrently at various nearby venues in Atlanta will be the IAPMO 79th Educational & Business Conference (call (909) 472-4207; e-mail: genelle.gonzales@iapmo.org; or visit www.iapmo.org), the PHCC 126th Annual Convention (call (800)- 533-7694; e-mail: perham@naphcc.org or point your browser to www.phccweb.org for more information), and the American Supply Association's annual meeting (watch www.asa.net for details.)

California PHCC Show Events

Compiled by Wendy Levine

As you are probably aware, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association is dedicated to promoting the industry and to the training and education of its members. The oldest trade association in the construction industry, the PHCC is well represented across the country, and particularly in California. And whether you’re a member or not, you, as a plumbing professional, should have some goals in common with the organization. To that end, we present a quick list of upcoming shows all over California.

The PHCC of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties will host its 29th annual trade show Apr. 15 at Centennial Hall in Hayward, Calif. A free shuttle is offered from the BART station to Expo 2008. For details, check out www.phccaccc.org/EXPO.htm . For booth information or to register, call Chris Bonetti at (925) 455-4188.

May 3 is the date of the San Diego PHCC’s event. The annual show, celebrating the group’s 16th year, will be held at Bing Crosby Hall on the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar. Registration is free and visitors are eligible for a cash door prize. Visit www.phccsd.org/Trade_Show.html or call (858) 571-5003 for more information.

The 10th annual trade show hosted by PHCC of the Sacramento Valley will be held May 7 at the Scottish Rite Center in Sacramento. Those who register early will be eligible for a raffle prize. More than 30 exhibitors have already signed on for the event, which also includes a golf tournament. Find out more at  www.phccsacvalley.org/golf_tournament1.htm.

Long Beach is again the setting for the PHCC of the Greater Los Angeles Area trade show. The 33rd annual PHCC-GLAA event takes place on Jun. 7 at the Long Beach Convention Center. This year the show is dedicated to longtime trade show manager Harry Reed, who died last year. Exhibitors from around the country and the world will attend. More information is available at www.phccglaa.org/tradeshow/index.htm.

The PHCC of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties brings its trade show to the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. The Oct. 22 event will also include free training seminars, lunch and parking. Sign up at  www.phcc.com/tradeshow.htm.

INDUSTRY NEWS

GreenPlumbers USA Teams Up for Conservation
GreenPlumbers USA, a training and accreditation program focusing on water conservation and climate care issues, has partnered with conservation groups the Alliance for Water Efficiency and the California Center for Sustainable Energy to further its goal of making plumbing as green as can be.

“The U.S. government’s General Accounting Office has reported that 36 states in the U.S. anticipate freshwater shortages in the next 10 years,” said Steve Lehtonen, GreenPlumbers USA spokesman and executive director of the California State PHCC in Sacramento. “With partners like these, we believe we can provide a critical educational initiative that will help to protect the resources of the planet.”

The GreenPlumbers program was originally the brainchild of the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia. It has been operating there successfully since 2001. Throughout Australia, more than 5,000 Green Plumbers have been accredited, and water consumption has been reduced up to 50 percent from 1990 levels. The program was imported by Lehtonen following a trip to Australia and the goal for 2008 is to train at least 8,000 Green Plumbers in the United States.

GreenPlumbers USA offers training workshops and accreditation to plumbers and contractors throughout the U.S., with more than 200 California participants and upcoming workshops in Connecticut, Kansas, Wisconsin and Texas. The program offers five workshops on climate care, water care, water recycling and conservation, and solar water heating. GreenPlumbers hopes to make this training free and available to all plumbers across the nation, creating a knowledgeable workforce with a mission.

Taco Raises 2008 Prices
Taco, Inc., of Cranston, R.I., has announced a price increase for its residential and commercial product lines. Residential products, including circulators, valves, air separators, electronic controls and hydronic accessories will increase between 5- and 6 percent. Commercial products and parts include pumps, pump motors and pump parts, commercial circulators (to include LoadMatch circulators), valves and Twin Tees, heat exchangers, expansion tanks, air and dirt separators and air controls are set to increase between 3- and 10 percent.

HD Supply Shutting Some Doors
HD Supply is closing its plumbing and HVAC branch in Tucson. The softening residential construction market is being cited as the cause. A spokeswoman said the company’s HD Supply Waterworks location will remain open. HD Supply ranked second on Industrial Distribution magazine’s 2007 “Big 50” list of distributors, with sales of $12.1 billion in 2006.

PHCC Big Easy Summit
The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association sponsored a workforce summit Jan. 23 in New Orleans to focus attention on the shortage of skilled plumbing and HVACR industry workers and develop a plan for the future. Approximately 40 participants discussed current ways that workers are being recruited and trained in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. They also shared ideas on how to attract and educate workers in the future.
