Network ’07 Seminar Roundup

Network ’07, a convention for plumbing, heating and cooling contractors, takes place Oct. 24-27 in Anaheim. “Bright Opportunities on the Horizon” is this year’s theme.
Organizers said the emphasis this year will be on people more than products—specifically how individual strengths can be leveraged for collective gain. Co-sponsored by Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Auxiliary and the American Supply Association, Network ’07 offers 22 seminars and workshops to enlighten more than a thousand national distributors, contractors and business owners expected to attend.
Thursday’s seminars include “California Contract Law for Contractors,” led by Reeves Journal
"Legal Corner" columnist Sam Abdulaziz and “Hiring and Retaining New Employees,” with Kirk Alter. Adam J. Fein, Ph.D., will hold a seminar called “Facing the Forces of Change.” Fein will discuss major trends such as private label products, demand-driven channels, new profit models and how the Internet uniquely connects customers. QSC Business coach John O’Connor will teach “How to Write a Business Plan” and discuss “Bonuses to Increase Profitability and Productivity,” while colleague Lawrence Snow talks numbers at “Financials for Service and Repair Contractors” and helps set “Your Selling Price.”
Also on Thursday, “How to Put High Performance Plumbing Marketing in Your Company, Instantly” is being offered in two sessions by marketing man Adams Hudson. Other must-attend seminars address the California lead ban, manufacturing trends, sales compensation, how to create a socially responsible business and an update on the 2006 UPC.
A workshop from the Association of Independent Manufacturers Representatives will examine the relationship between independent reps and vendors. Manufacturers reps and vendor executives are invited to attend this session. The ASA Young Executives are hosting a “Meet the Pros” round table, to get up close and personal with industry experts. Networking opportunities are also offered.
The event's keynote speaker should appeal to anyone who wants to get ahead in the digital age. Terry Jones, founder of Travelocity.com, will speak on “Leadership in a Wired World.” Jones will share ideas on using the Web to enhance profitability and customer service. On Friday, look for inspiration from Kenneth Majer, Ph.D, at a breakfast program sponsored by the ASA Vendor Member Division. Majer’s address is called “Corporate Values are a Business Proposition—Not Just Pretty Words on the Wall.” Majer is the author of three books on corporate vales and leadership.

'07 Seminar Spotlight: UPC Update with Lynne Simnick
One of the more pop
ular seminars offered at Network ’07 is likely to be the “2006 Uniform Plumbing Code Update,” led by Lynne Simnick on October 25 in Anaheim. Simnick, who has 28 years in the industry, has been IAPMO’s director of code development for three years. She previously served as a liaison with the International Code Council.

Simnick is set to review and clarify updates to the UPC from 2000 to 2006 and
amendments to the California Code from 2001 to 2007.
“Any code changes that have been proposed, modified and approved by the technical committee and went through the code change process will be addressed,” she said, adding highlights will include drain, waste and vent system design criteria, cross connection control, the addition of new materials and fixtures.
"Any language that has changed or alternate approvals—I know that’s going to be new,” she said. Why is this information important to know? "Someone might be very familiar with the 2000 version, but we have since published the 2003 and we’re now on the 2006 [Code]," she said. "They need to know the latest code changes that have occurred in order to implement the plumbing and mechanical codes."
